About The Event

Crisis Communications – Are You Ready?

Steering through one crisis is hard enough as a communicator, but what happens when the crises start piling up?

Join PRSA SD/IC for a candid talk with Dave Barthmuss of General Motors to see how his West Coast communications team worked through the challenges of being in the American automotive industry from 2009 to 2010 to the present.

General Motors, a symbol of national pride for 100 years, filed for bankruptcy and accepted a federal bailout that sparked national outrage in many circles. Their first foray into the electric car was greeted with a movie, “Who Killed the Electric Car,” that painted not only the company, but its spokespeople, as nothing short of bad.

Jump ahead to 2011: GM is on the road back to success and a follow-up movie, “The Revenge of the Electric Car,” has overturned its predecessor.

Through a heavy emphasis on high-touch grassroots programs, the GM West team managed to bring cars directly to customers, and come out of the crisis with higher customer loyalty, mindshare and credibility – along with valuable lessons that every PR practitioner can learn from.
